Vulpis et Ciconia (Phaedrus)

SOURCE: For a complete edition of Phaedrus with macrons, see the edition by J.H. Drake at GoogleBooks. This is fable 1.26 in Phaedrus. For parallel versions, see Perry 426.

READ OUT LOUD. Choose which marked text you prefer to practice with - macrons in verse form, or macrons in prose order, or accent marks in prose order, or focusing on the iambic meter. You will find materials for all of these options below. :-)

VERSE MACRONS. Here is the verse text with macrons:

Nūllī nocendum, sī quis vērō laeserit,
multandum similī iūre fābella admonet.
Volpēs ad cēnam dīcitur cicōniam
prior invītāsse, et illī in patinā līquidam
posuisse sorbitiōnem, quam nūllō modō
gustāre ēsuriēns potuerit cicōnia.
Quae, volpem cum revocāsset, intrītō cibō
plēnam lagōnam posuit; huic rōstrum īnserēns
satiātur ipsa et torquet convīvam famē.
Quae cum lagōnae collum frūstrā lamberet,
peregrīnam sīc locūtam volucrem accēpimus:
"Sua quisque exempla dēbet aequō animō patī."

PROSE MACRONS. Here is the same text with macrons written out in prose word order:

Fābella admonet nūllī nocendum; sī quis vērō laeserit, similī iūre multandum. Volpēs dīcitur cicōniam ad cēnam prior invītāsse, et illī sorbitiōnem līquidam in patinā posuisse, quam cicōnia, ēsuriēns, nūllō modō gustāre potuerit. Cicōnia, cum volpem revocāsset, lagōnam cibō intrītō plēnam posuit; ipsa, rōstrum huic īnserēns, satiātur et convīvam famē torquet. Cum volpēs frūstrā lagōnae collum lamberet, accēpimus volucrem peregrīnam sīc locūtam: Quisque exempla sua patī dēbet animō aequō.

STRESS (ACCENT) MARKS. Here is the prose text with accents, plus some color-coding for the words of three or more syllables (blue: penultimate stress; red: antepenultimate stress):

Fabélla ádmonet nulli nocéndum; si quis vero laéserit, símili iure multándum. Volpes dícitur cicóniam ad cenam prior invitásse, et illi sorbitiónem líquidam in pátina posuísse, quam cicónia, esúriens, nullo modo gustáre potúerit. Cicónia, cum volpem revocásset, lagónam cibo intríto plenam pósuit; ipsa, rostrum huic ínserens, satiátur et convívam fame torquet. Cum volpes frustra lagónae collum lámberet, accépimus vólucrem peregrínam sic locútam: Quisque exémpla sua pati debet ánimo aequo.

IAMBIC METER. Here is the verse text with some color coding to assist in the iambic meter. The disyllabic elements (iambs/spondees) are not marked, but the trisyllabic elements are color-coded: dactyls are red, anapests are purple, and tribrachs are green (as is any proceleusmaticus, although that is a rare creature):

Nūllī· nocen·dum, sī· quis vē·rō lae·serit,
multan·dum simi·lī iū·re fā·bell~ ad·monet.
Volpēs· ad cē·nam dī·citur· cicō·niam

What follows is an unmarked version of the prose rendering to faciliate word searches:
Fabella admonet nulli nocendum; si quis vero laeserit, simili iure multandum. Volpes dicitur ciconiam ad cenam prior invitasse, et illi sorbitionem liquidam in patina posuisse, quam ciconia, esuriens, nullo modo gustare potuerit. Ciconia, cum volpem revocasset, lagonam cibo intrito plenam posuit; ipsa, rostrum huic inserens, satiatur et convivam fame torquet. Cum volpes frustra lagonae collum lamberet, accepimus volucrem peregrinam sic locutam :Quisque exempla sua pati debet animo aequo.
